“Rebecca? Hey, honey. You need to wake up.”

The deep voice came from above her, quiet and coaxing, deliciously deep.

“You’re home.”

She wasn’t home. She didn’t have a real home.

Frowning at the thought, she tried to ignore the voice and snuggled her head against the warm pillow under her head. The crick in her neck ruined the attempt.

It also made her conscious enough to realize that what supported her head wasn’t a pillow. It was a man’s thigh. A very hard, muscular, masculine thigh.

“Come on.”

Joe.

She felt his hands slip under her shoulder as the will to straighten up on her own fought the lethargy that pulled the strength from her bones—and the dizziness that made her want to lie right back down when she pushed herself up.

“Let’s get you inside. Where’s your key?”

She fumbled for her purse, then fumbled for the passenger door. By the time she had it open, he was there, sliding his arm around her in the cold and guiding her inside the house.

Leaning against him felt nice. All that solid muscle supporting her.

“Where’s your bedroom? Upstairs or down?”

The bedroom she was using was upstairs. The thought of climbing all those steps, however, held no appeal at all.

“You don’t have to take me,” she insisted, thinking she’d just lean on him for another minute. “I’m just tired.”

“And drunk.”

“Am not.”

“Are, too. Come on.”

He moved her into the short hallway beside them, his arm still around her as he led her into the frilly, rosebud-covered guest room where he’d once examined Columbus.

Taking her by the shoulders, he turned her around when they reached the side of the bed.

She sat, looked up. Seeing him blur, she closed her eyes, tipped sideways and let her head land on the pillow. The last thing she remembered was her coat and boots being tugged off and the quilt at the bottom of the bed being tucked over her.
